NYU English Language Institute, School of Professional Studies Highlights 2020
“In addition to teaching content, when we also focus on teaching skills, then we turn students into active learners, and employ active learning strategies. The WSJ can be a tool for integrating the teaching of content and the teaching of skills because while students are developing content knowledge, they can also be taught the skills for synthesizing and applying that knowledge.”
— NYU Prof. Raúl Sánchez & Prof. Dan Bullock
NYU Profs. Raúl Sánchez and Dan Bullock from NYU’s School of Professional Studies share how they use The Wall Street Journal in their courses to teach varying levels of international professionals, global corporate executives, and non-native English-speaking graduate students. This session covers how they incorporate WSJ to teach rhetorical conventions, higher-order linguistic strategies, and intercultural communication.
For Sánchez and Bullock, the WSJ is a great multimedia tool for building both content knowledge and global communication skills, while enhancing the students’ career prospects. It incorporates multiple formats including podcasts, videos, traditional print, and even a Faculty Assessment Tool with comprehension quizzes. These formats can be used to teach a range of skills from the basic -- how to synthesize information -- to the more advanced -- developing professional presentations.
